If you follow me on Twitter or Threads, you likely saw the news that this past week I was promoted to Associate Agent at The Purcell Agency. I am so excited for this next opportunity for a new career in the world of reading and developing author careers along side them.
I won’t lie, I’m a bit scared to write this post, because if you’re on twitter often like I am, there can be things that are taken out of context (though most of the time it’s things completely in context and accountability needs to be held). But I wanted to clarify to anyone in the future that is interested in querying me the difference I see between Authoring and Agenting.
First, I learned about my love of working with people to craft their story because I am a writer. Thus, I started working with beta readers and CPs. As I did, I realized I was excited to read their stories, zoom with them to discuss ways to raise stakes or tension, or generally discuss ideas they want to start outlining. It was FUN. And that made me think, “how can I do this more often?”
That’s not to say that I don’t also still enjoy writing– because I do. But, for me, there is space for both. A love of helping authors with their story, while also creating my own. Especially once I realized I have unique stories I still want to share with the world, while helping others bring their unique stories to the world as well.
I do want to say though, aside from having one website that will be home to both my agenting and writing, most of my other content will be separate. I will have social media for both being an agent and author. I want to keep these things separate because they are two very different things for me. Both, though, two careers I am so excited to be working on.
I also think that writing has fulfilled something for me that I didn’t know was lying dormant for many years. But what I miss is the sales aspect (the structure), that I had at my old job– which I enjoyed. I had stepped away from it to help start my families vineyard (which I am still doing). But my old career at Katz Media Group was similar to agenting in many ways. We served as the “middle man” between our clients (radio stations), and agencies. I had to write stories to sell the radio station, while using data (and other things like pricing and building schedules). Ultimately though, I think agenting will help me get back to what I loved about that job, while still doing what I love with reading/CPing etc.
I am so excited to meet my new clients. As someone who has a wonderful agent, knowing that I can be that person to someone out there has me *feeling feelings*. I am excited for what the future will hold!
I am closed to queries currently. It will be a bit until I get Query Manager set up. In the meantime, I hope to share what I’ll be looking for in queries along with my MSWL.
